Grupo de Amigos da Criança stands for GAC and means "Group of Friends of the children". GAC is a private charity organi- zation for children, registered in Belo Horizonte. Belo Horizonte is the 3rd largest city in Brazil with a population of 2.5 million.
GAC owns 2 day care centers located in the slum "Favela Aglomerado Sta. Lúcia”, also known as Morro do Papagaio.
Kinderhorizonte e.V. is a charitable organisation registered in Germany. It was founded for the sole purpose of helping GAC. The organization´s goal is to secure the future of GAC through donations and godparent programs, thus offering GAC´s children hope for their future:

A life removed from crime, starvation and poverty!

With a population of some 40.000 inhabitants, the slum Papagaio is the largest in Belo Horizonte.
The slum is dominated by drug dealers. It is considered extremely violent and dangerous, because of the prevailing poverty and the social riff with its rich neighborhoods.

| How and why GAC was founded?
In February of 1990, a group of responsible parents, all living in the Papagaio slum, founded GAC with the goal to improve their children´s chances in life and to provide them with adequate education and social care.
With the slogan "Construindo no presente - o futuro ser humano" the new generation of children should be afforded a brighter future, removed from crime and drugs! At the same time, the children´s parents will have a chance to find a job to support their families, knowing their children are in good hands.

Paulo (left side), was one of GAC´s founders. Today, after more than 15 years of hardship and improvisation, he is still active at GAC.
But he is not only the founder, he was also our first contact, when we visited Papagaio in February of 2005. He showed us around explaining enthusiastically and paciently GAC´s two facilities.
And when we looked into the sparkling children eyes, we decided for ourselves:
